Batsheva Dance Company - Three

18 November 2007

Art, health & social progress - all in one package, delivered the past few nights at BAM Next Wave.

Ohad Naharin, 21st-century heir to Martha Graham and very much his own man. Gaga developed out of a serious injury, and what seems to be an innate generosity of spirit:

I didn’t only develop what was good for me, but I had to develop what was good for other dancers: recognizing one’s weaknesses, getting in touch with efficiency of movement and multi-dimensional movement, explosive power, the connection between pleasure, pain, and effort…

One hour and 10 minutes, give or take a few, was all it took for 17 highly individual dancers, working with exquisitely honed art, solo and in ensemble, to reclaim glorious, pugnacious renaissance humanism for our benighted age.

Esther Pasztory - 1

7 November 2007

At last, maybe I found someone who can help me put Teotihuacán in some rational context.

Definitely read her book Thinking with Things: Toward a New Vision of Art. In the meantime, I’ll start quoting:

My argument is that naturalism is always potentially available for the artist – that is, it does not take generations to master it – but only at certain times has it been chosen as a preferred visual language.

More to come. As is my usual practice, I’ll provide a minimum of commentary and analysis, but try to complement with links etc when I can.
