Fall for Dance Festival - Lyon Opera Ballet

30 September 2007

Grosse Fugue (NY Premiere)
Dancers: Dorothée Delabie, Peggy Grelat Dupont, Sora Lee, Julie Tardy Dupeyron

Choreography by Maguy Marin
Music by Ludwig van Beethoven

Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue must have sounded like this to his first audiences. Classical lyricism rising out of inelegant immediate physicality. This must be seen.

New York Film Festival 3 - Blade Runner: The Final Cut

Blade Runner: The Final Cut
Ridley Scott, director
USA, 1982/2007

Such a bleak and beautiful movie. Ridley Scott says he worked hard on this film, and it shows. Every frame glows with the urban fire of Teotihuacán, NYC, LA, Hong Kong…

Blade Runner (the title is from William S. Burroughs’s treatment of a novel by Alan E. Nourse) is Scott’s creation, inspired by Philip K. Dick’s brilliant and sad Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (read it!).

In this final cut, Blade Runner enters the pantheon. But it must be seen in a theater. (Home theater doesn’t count.) A perfect movie. Even the score by Vangelis is revealed as a masterpiece - Blade Runner scored as the last great silent film.

New York Film Festival 2 - The Romance of Astreé and Céladon

Les Amours d’Astrée et de Céladon (The Romance of Astreé and Céladon)
Eric Rohmer, director
France, 2007

A pitifully attended (only 90% filled) New York screening of this late film by one of the founders of the French New Wave. But for the aged filmgoers who filled the majority of the seats, a 17th century parable of lost and found love (and our own critically endangered relationship with nature) lit up the screen. This film would complete a fine ancien trilogy with Die Marquise von O… and Perceval le Gallois.

Fall for Dance Festival - Kirov Ballet

Kirov Ballet of the Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg, Russia
Valery Gergiev, Artistic Director

Middle Duet
Choreography by Alexei Ratmansky

Dancers: Ekaterina Kondaurova, Islom Baimuradov

Music by Yuri Khanon
Costumes by Tatiana Kotegova
Lighting by Vladimir Lukasevich
Production Manager: Michael Vool

Spare, beautifully repetitious, with angular calligraphic movements - this work captures the sadness of coupling while honoring the persistence of individuality. The choreography focuses on the ballerina, and Ekaterina Kondaurova is such a phenomenon that it is too easy to overlook the fine work of Islom Baimuradov. A perfect union of music and motion.

The Kirov Ballet will be in residence at New York City Center, 1-20 April 2008.
