The Holy Land of Dance/Berlinblog

28 August 2006

The centerpiece of Tanz im August, “Coming Soon.” How can I summarize 12 hours of vision?

The choreographer/architect Paul Gazzola created this event. A long story, but it ended with 59 videotaped interviews with choreographers in Berlin describing their ideal rehearsal spaces. An amazing document. Not only does it offer great architectural source material, but it also gives an intimate picture of current performance theory.

Cultural production was the topic - these artists took time in Berlin’s punishing March to be videotaped. I believe they can transform performance spaces in the 21st century.

A Powerful Idea from Hansdehar

23 August 2006

Jonathan Allen reports in Reuters about Hansdehar, a rural village in northern India, which has taken the extraordinary step of posting a sketch of itself on the web. Hansdehar’s website (www.smartvillages.org) details the village’s vital statistics, development needs, and assets - down to its photo-ops for intrepid tourists.

The site promises more villages to come - definitely one to bookmark, watch, and support in any way you can.

An amazing city to walk in August. Temperate, with mountain-like hills. These thumbnails don’t do justice to the sheer visual beauty. Email me for larger files.

Perfect Bowling from the DDR/Berlinblog

Who would’ve thought? Berlin is a bowler’s paradise! More than 50 alleys in the city (you can find all of them at http://www.bowlinglinks.de/bahnen_d.htm#Berlin).

Tonight I tried my first. BowlingCenter am Alexanderplatz (www.bowling-am-alex.de).

Bowling Center am Alex

A beautifully maintained classic from the DDR. Heavenly. Great atmosphere, wonderful people. Someone must document this priceless legacy and living art form.

One of this amazing city’s most amazing quarters. Daniel Libeskind’s Jüdisches Museum and the Türkenmarkt am Maybachufer, among others. Just an introduction.

Open Source MIT

This is important. Professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are opening their syllabi, lecture notes, lectures, problem sets and solutions, and exams to one and all. To start, just go to the MIT OpenCourseWare website.

The architecture says it all. Many villages stitched together to form a city. The whole is greater than its parts, but - miraculously - the parts are also greater than the whole. A lesson about the individual.

Such a healthy plant.
