An Important Statement on Art & Real Estate

23 June 2006

Galapagos - an arts group in Brooklyn - has hit the nail on the head. Also note that Crains New York Business has become a key source of news about New York’s creative community…

“There’s not the inflow of young artists moving in the city like there used to be,” says Robert Elmes, director of Galapagos. “The conversation at this point isn’t whether or not there’s opportunity in New York, but just what other city they should go to.”

Mr. Elmes says his theater has already seen a significant drop in proposals from college students or recent graduates to come there and present their work.

Instead, young artists are heading to places like Pittsburgh, or even oversees to Berlin, which has been aggressive about promoting itself as an affordable hub for emerging arts.

The main problem in New York, Mr. Elmes says, is the cost of real estate. That has led to a slew of off-Broadway theater closings in recent months.

Churchill on Activism

14 June 2006

Words for our times:

If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not so costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance for survival. There may be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no chance of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.

–quoted by Henry Potter in Vanity Fair (July 2006)

Klezmer & Mah-Jongg

12 June 2006

A delightful celebration of two essentially New York cultures on the Lower East Side, the Egg Rolls and Egg Creams Block Party, brought amazing talent together with a broad swath of appreciative humanity. With luck, proceeds will help restore an awe-inspiring synagogue on Eldridge Street - the host of today’s party. Visit www.eldridgestreet.org.

This 1887 Synagogue is the first built on the Lower East Side by Eastern European Jews.

The joy of Mah-Jongg.

A surviving original window.

Exposed original wall boards.

An amazing Klezmer band in the sanctuary. I wish you could’ve heard. The acoustics of this synagogue are amazing.

Brilliant!

A little walk afterwards. The Forward building, now condominiums. The newspaper survives. Home of the genius Ben Katchor.

The cornice, with elegant Hebrew characters.
